- This plot shows the solar x-ray flux values. The values increase when solar bursts such as solar flares occur. Strong solar flares need to be consistently monitored because of their negative impact on HF communications on the ground and satellite communication in space. X-rays observed by GOES satellites are classified into two sections; one ranging from 0.5 to 4.0 Angstrom, the other ranging from 1.0 to 8.0 Angstrom. Because the temporary disappearance of the Sun produces zero values when a GOES satellite moves into the shadow cast by the Earth, observed values occasionally drop dramatically.
