  • The plots show the total amount (B Total) and the component of z-axis (Bz) in the interplanetary magnetic field, which are observed in real-time by the ACE satellite, a satellite observing the Sun from a L1 (Lagrangian) point between the Sun and the Earth. When the values of the z-axis component of the interplanetary magnetic field become negative, the direction turns anti-parallel to the geomagnetic field, which results in increased activity in the geomagnetic field. Put another way, the increased negative values of the Bz component carry a higher probability of occurrence of geomagnetic field activity (e.g. geomagnetic storms).
